Classic Liverwurst Sandwich

Classic Liverwurst Sandwich

If you’ve never tried a good liverwurst sandwich, this old-fashioned combination might surprise you! Creamy liverwurst, crunchy onions, tangy mustard, and crisp pickles come together between slices of hearty bread for a simple, savory sandwich with plenty of flavor. 😋🥒

🛒 Ingredients

  • 8 oz (225 g) liverwurst, sliced
  • 4 slices rye, whole-wheat, or white bread
  • 2 tbsp yellow or Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • ¼ small yellow onion, very thinly sliced
  • 4–6 dill pickle slices
  • 1 tbsp softened butter, optional
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Lettuce leaves, optional

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the bread
Spread a thin layer of butter on the bread if desired. On two slices, spread mayonnaise; on the other two, spread mustard.

2. Layer the sandwich
Place the liverwurst slices evenly over the bread. Add the thinly sliced onion, dill pickles, and lettuce if using.

3. Season
Add a small pinch of freshly ground black pepper. The pickles and mustard already provide plenty of flavor, so additional salt usually isn’t necessary.

4. Assemble
Top with the remaining slices of bread and gently press the sandwiches together.

5. Slice and serve
Cut each sandwich in half and serve immediately with extra dill pickles on the side. 🥒

💡 Easy Variations

For a richer sandwich, add a little horseradish to the mustard. You can also use toasted rye bread for extra crunch or add thinly sliced tomatoes for freshness.

❤️ Why It Works

The creamy liverwurst pairs beautifully with the sharpness of mustard, the crunch of fresh onion, and the tangy bite of dill pickles. It’s quick, filling, and has that unmistakable old-school deli sandwich feel.
