Uninvited Guests and New Beginnings
Funmi stood on the welcome mat wearing a striking emerald green dress, carrying a bottle of expensive wine, and sporting a smile that did not quite reach her eyes. Behind me, the entire room seemed to hold its breath. The background music suddenly felt too loud, cutting through the thick silence that fell over the apartment. My husband pushed his way to the front, stepping right beside me with a triumphant look on his face, ready to showcase just how modern and flexible his life was.

“Funmi, you made it,” he said, his voice carrying an extra layer of enthusiasm that felt entirely rehearsed. He reached out to take the bottle from her hands, his eyes darting toward me to check if I was breaking down or preparing to cause a scene.
Instead, I looked straight at her, kept my posture light, and held out my hand for a warm, steady handshake. “Welcome to the apartment,” I said, my tone smooth and completely untroubled. “It’s wonderful that you could join us for this milestone. Please, make yourself at home.”
Funmi hesitation was brief, but obvious. She had clearly expected tension, iced-over glances, or at least a bitter side-eye. Finding none, she offered a polite nod and stepped into the living room. My husband stood there for a moment, visibly unsettled by how completely effortless my reaction was. He had prepared himself for a fight, a tearful confrontation, or an ultimatum that would prove he had the upper hand. My quiet composure robbed him of his moment…

For the next hour, the party moved forward, but the air remained fragile. My husband hovered around Funmi, introducing her to his colleagues, laughing louder than usual at her jokes, and trying to project an image of a man surrounded by people who adored him. Every few minutes, his eyes would scan the crowd searching for me, expecting to catch me sulking in a corner or whispering angrily to a friend.
Instead, he found me chatting pleasantly with his supervisor, handing out appetizers, and casually slipping out to the balcony to take brief calls. What he didn’t realize was that I wasn’t sulking at all. I was coordinating. While he was busy entertaining his ex and showing off our home, I had quietly made three trips to my work van parked around the corner, transferring the pre-packed bags that contained my life.
By six o’clock, the party reached its peak. Friends were gathered around the dining table, enjoying the spread, while my husband raised his glass to make a toast. He cleared his throat, inviting everyone to listen.
“I just want to thank everyone for coming out today,” he announced, his voice booming over the room. “Moving into this space represents a huge step forward. It takes maturity to build something lasting, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come and how well everyone gets along.” He looked directly at me, raising his glass with a self-satisfied nod, expecting me to smile back or raise my glass in return.
I waited until the applause died down. The entire room was watching us. My best friend stood near the back, holding her phone up slightly, capturing the moment just as I had asked her to do earlier…
