Traditional Amish Onion Patties Recipe
Ingredients
• 2 large onions, thinly sliced
• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 large egg
• ½-¾ cup milk (enough for thick batter)
• 1 teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon black pepper
• 1 teaspoon baking powder (optional but helpful)
• Oil or lard for frying
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Onions
Slice onions thinly and separate them into strands. The thinner the slice, the better the texture.
Step 2: Make the Batter
In a bowi, mix flour, salt, pepper, and baking powder.
In a separate bowl, whisk egg and ½ cup milk.
Combine wet and dry ingredients. Add more milk gradually until you have a thick, scoopable batter — not runny.
Step 3: Fold in the Onions
Add sliced onions to the batter and stir until coated evenly.
Step 4: Heat the Oil
Pour about ½ inch of oil into a cast iron skillet.
Heat over medium until shimmering.
Step 5: Fry
Drop heaping spoonfuls into hot oil. Flatten slightly with the back of the spoon.
Cook 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
Step 6: Drain & Serve
Remove to paper towels. Sprinkle lightly with salt while hot.
Serve immediately.
